CAVE Academy at Warner Bros. Discovery

It was great to spend some time with Crew HQ at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden where CAVE Academy delivered a workshop on the topic of Onset Data Acquisition (for VFX).

The crowd was a good mix from departments such as Matchmove, Production, Camera and Model Making, so we were able to have some fantastic cross-department conversations.

Not only did we look at what the VFX department captures onset, we also explored the more important question of “why” we capture the data, and then looked at practical examples of how the data is used in post-production to complement the work of the onset crew.

Any form of visual storytelling is a multi-disciplinary mash-up of people, roles and tasks, and when one department is aware of the “why” behind another department, things generally flow better.

It is great to see studios such as Warner Bros. Discovery pushing for cross-department training and we look forward to seeing more of it all-round.
