CAVE x Bentley

Over the past few years, CAVE Academy have had the pleasure of working with Bentley and Paramex on the development of their online car configurator.

Our role on the project was to design and implement a consistent workflow for material development that would allow for the creation of over 120+ different paints (metallic, solid, gloss, pearlescent), and render them using a single neutral-balanced light rig.

So we’d need to go from the darkest to the brightest paint, and every paint in-between without the need of multiple light rigs.

For the development of the materials, we photographed each paint sample under a controlled lighting setup and then created a ‘digital’ twin in order to capture the unique characteristics of each paint.

Here is a little sample of the work, of which you find more on the Bentley website (and of course you may also want to configure your own car).

The project was a great experience to see how other industries tackle the task of look development and lighting, especially when the end result is primarily for colour-accuracy between the digital and physical realm.
